FLU SEASON IS HERE .....DO YOU KNOW THE SYMPTOMS ?

GET YOUR FLU SHOT AT HALLIDAY'S & KOIVISTO'S PHARMACY

Flu Symptoms & Severity

Influenza Symptoms

Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
* It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

Flu Complications

Most people who get influenza will recover in a few days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications (such as pneumonia) as a result of the flu, some of which can be life-threatening and result in death.
Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections are examples of complications from flu. The flu can make chronic health problems worse. For example, people with asthma may experience asthma attacks while they have the flu, and people with chronic congestive heart failure may experience worsening of this condition that is triggered by the flu.

People at Higher Risk from Flu

Anyone can get the flu (even healthy people), and serious problems related to flu can happen at any age, but some people are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. This includes people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), pregnant women, and young children.

Flu Severity

Flu is unpredictable and how severe it is can vary widely from one season to the next depending on many things, including:
  • what flu viruses are spreading,
  • how much flu vaccine is available,
  • when vaccine is available,
  • how many people get vaccinated, and
  • how well the flu vaccine is matched to flu viruses that are causing illness.
Over a period of 31 seasons between 1976 and 2007, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. During a regular flu season, about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older.

MAY IS NATIONAL ARTHRITIS AWARNESS MONTH AND HALLIDAY'S AND KOIVISTO'S PHARMCY SUPPORTS THIS CAUSE. LISTED BELOW ARE THE FACTS AND MYTHS ABOUT ARTHRITIS.

Advocacy, Dr. Patience White.

Face the Facts – Debunking the Myths
... Myth: Arthritis is a disease associated with aging. Fact: Arthritis can affect people of all ages. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65 and some of the most serious forms of arthritis occur in teenagers or people in their 20s and 30s.

Myth: Only old people get arthritis. Fact: Children get arthritis, too. Nearly 300,000 children are affected by arthritis.
Myth: Knuckle cracking causes arthritis. Fact: Knuckle cracking can’t trigger arthritis, but it can stretch tissue and lead to discomfort.

Myth: Arthritis is just aches and pains. Fact: Arthritis is a more frequent cause of activity limitation than heart disease, cancer or diabetes and causes work limitations for nearly one in three people in the U.S.

Myth: Cold weather makes arthritis worse. Fact: There is no scientific evidence that a particular climate is better for people with arthritis, but changes in barometric pressure, often associated with inclement weather, may affect people with arthritis.

Myth: There is nothing I can do about arthritis. I just have to “live with it.” Fact: Early diagnosis and management can prevent the long term pain and disability seen with many kinds of arthritis.

Myth: Arthritis is one disease. Fact: There are more than 100 types of arthritis and knowing what type you have makes a difference in how to treat it.

It’s important to recognize the symptoms of arthritis early as many forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can cause irreversible joint damage, often within the first two years of the disease. Osteoarthritis, the most common form, can develop within 10 years of a major joint injury.

As part of the Faces of Arthritis campaign, the Arthritis Foundation encourages people to raise awareness of this serious disease.

Varicose, Spider Veins and Compression Stockings.

Halliday's & Koivisto's Pharmacy carries a wide range of compression stockings that are used to treat many different leg problems, like varicose and spider veins!

What are varicose veins and spider veins?

Veins can bulge with pools of blood when they fail to circulate the blood properly. These visible and bulging veins, called varicose veins, are more common in the legs and thighs, but can dev...elop anywhere in the body.

Large varicose veins can be visible, bulging, palpable (can be felt by touching), long, and dilated (greater than 4 millimeters in diameter).

Small "spider veins" also can appear on the skin's surface. These may look like short, fine lines, "starburst" clusters, or a web-like maze. They are typically not palpable. Spider veins are most common in the thighs, ankles, and feet. They may also appear on the face. The medical term for spider veins is telangiectasias.

Mastectomy – 10/6/09

Topic – Mastectomy: Lifting OK For Breast Cancer Survivors

According to a recent Associated Press article written by Marilynn Marchione, lifting by breast cancer patients may not have to cause painful arm swelling if the patient participates in weight lifting training.

A new study by Kathryn Schmitz, an exercise scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, funded by the federal government, found that women who were doing various lifting had fewer arm problems because they had better muscle tone. The report is detailed in the August issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Women who have had radiation to the armpit, or lymph nodes removed to check for cancer, can suffer lymphedema – a buildup of fluids that causes painful and unsightly swelling of the arms or hands, the article explains.

To avoid this, in the past, doctors have advised women to refrain from any lifting of toddlers, heavy purses, etc. But Schmitz challenged this with a yearlong study involving 141 breast cancer survivors. Half the patients continued their regular routine. The other half were given weightlifting classes. They wore custom-fitted compression garments on their affected arms and gradually increased their weigh training over time.

At the end of the study, fewer weightlifters suffered lymphedema flare-ups than the ones who did not participate in weightlifting (14 % of weightlifters vs. 29% of the others suffered flare-ups).

According to the article, Schmitz says patients should not rush into weight training because it could cause problems. She suggests…

- Have a certified fitness professional teach you how to exercise properly.

- Start slow, with a program that gradually progresses.

- Wear a well-fitting compression garment during workouts.

Diabetes - 8/14/09

Topic - Diabetes

8/14/09

A good deal of our business for compression garments is from patients suffering from diabetes.

In case you don’t know, diabetes is an imbalance between sugar, or glucose and insulin. When the body ingests glucose, the pancreas secretes insulin to convert it into energy. With diabetes, the body doesn’t get enough insulin.

Then there is Type 2 diabetes. Once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, Type 2 is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel.

When you have Type 2 diabetes, your body is resistant to the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or your body doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level.

The danger of undiagnosed diabetes can result in heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, loss of limb and death.

Health statistics show that twenty-three million Americans have diabetes, with a quarter of them not even knowing they have it. The biggest risk factor for diabetes is family history.

When visiting your physician, I suggest you periodically ask for a blood-glucose test to monitor your condition.
